What are honorary and adjunct appointments?
- Honorary and adjunct appointments are conferred on staff affiliated with KCL. This includes trust staff who contribute to KCL scholastic or research activities.
- The difference between Honorary and Adjunct status can relate to the level of seniority of the holder but is primarily based on the level of contribution to KCL teaching or research.
- Honorary appointments at Lecturer and Senior Lecturer level are valid for 5 years.
- Honorary appointments at Reader and Professorial levels are indefinite.
- Adjunct appointments at all levels are valid for 5 years.
Honorary and Adjunct appointments are not:
- Individuals holding honorary or adjunct appointments are not employed by King’s College London, and these appointments are not conferred on King’s College London employees.
- These are not emeritus titles such as Emeritus Reader or Professor
- Having an Honorary or Adjunct position is not the same as having a KHP passport.
What are the advantages?

Colleagues affiliated with KCL through Honorary or Adjunct appointments are given access to King’s College London library facilities and IT facilities, including a King’s affiliate email account.

Under the King’s College London Academic Regulations
Honorary staff may:
- Be the second or third supervisor for research degree students.
- Act as co-PI on KCL led grants.

Adjunct staff may:
- Be the first supervisor for research degree students.
- Act as PI on KCL led grants.
What are the requirements to get a KCL Honorary or Adjunct appointment?
- General requirements: Appointments are restricted to clinicians whose substantive contract with a clinical organisation is permanent. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK; and cannot be subject to disciplinary or capacity procedures. Clinicians on locum or short-term contracts are not eligible.
- Requirements for honorary appointments: must contribute to KCL educational and/or research endeavours.
- Requirements for adjunct appointments: must be employed by one of the KHP trusts and already hold a KCL honorary appointment at Senior Lecturer, Reader or Professorial level.
What is the application process for Honorary or Adjunct appointments?
The same form is used to apply for, or renew, an Honorary appointment at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level.
